Millions of Americans receiving Social Security benefits are set to see a boost in their payments this February, thanks to a recent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), the average monthly payment for retirees will rise to $1,955, while select recipients, including those on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), will see an average payment of $930.
Why Are Social Security Payments Increasing?
Every year, the SSA adjusts payments to keep up with inflation, ensuring that beneficiaries don’t lose their purchasing power. In 2025, the COLA increase is 2.5%, a smaller bump compared to 2024’s 3.2% and 2023’s historic 8.7% hike. While this increase is moderate, it still provides much-needed financial relief to retirees and disabled individuals relying on Social Security.
For retirees, this means an average increase of $48 per month, bringing the total monthly benefit to $1,955. However, individual payments may be higher or lower depending on factors like earnings history and when benefits were claimed.
How Much Will SSI Recipients Get?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will also see a small boost. In 2025, individual SSI payments will increase from $943 to $967 per month, while couples will receive $1,450, up from $1,415.
These increases aim to help low-income individuals and families keep up with rising costs for necessities like food, housing, and healthcare.
When Will February Payments Arrive?
The SSA follows a strict schedule when distributing benefits, based on birth dates:
- Born 1st–10th → Payment arrives February 12, 2025
- Born 11th–20th → Payment arrives February 19, 2025
- Born 21st–31st → Payment arrives February 26, 2025
For those who have been receiving benefits before May 1997 or receive both Social Security and SSI, payments will be made on February 3, 2025. If the scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, payments will be issued the previous business day.
How to Check Your Payment?
Beneficiaries can track their payments through the “My Social Security” portal on the SSA website. This tool provides real-time updates on benefit amounts, payment schedules, and eligibility changes.
With living costs continuing to rise, these increases may not be life-changing, but they can make a difference. Recipients should plan ahead and explore other financial resources if needed.
