The federal government reported over $247 billion in payment errors in the year 2022. The majority of the money wasted comes from five federal programs including Medicaid and Medicare. They said they should not have improper payments or error payments that should be made by the federal government
Examples of error payments are payments from people who have died and are not eligible anymore for government programs. The $247 billion 2022 improper payments were smaller than the estimated first improper payment in 2021 for about $281 billion and $206 billion for in the year of 2020.
According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, improper and error payments are a big issue in the federal government. There are actually a total of $2.4 trillion in payment errors in the last two decades by the federal government and they said it is unacceptable.

$247 Billion 2022 Improper Payments: Reported By The Federal Government
There are Eighteen agencies reported an estimated $247 billion in error payments in the year 2022 across 82 programs, all in all it’s about $194 billion including the Medicaid, Medicare, the Paycheck Protection Program, Unemployment Insurance, and the Earned Income Tax Credit. The report was noted and called the attention of Congress amend the Social Security Act to share the Social Security Administration’s full death data with the U.S Treasury Department’s Do Not Pay System. Lawmakers said that they will try their best to prevent this such illegality and prevent improper payments in the next coming years.
