Lee, once a formidable hurricane, now maintains sustained winds of 45 mph, moving northward after making landfall on Long Island in Nova Scotia last Saturday.
Post-tropical cyclone Lee is anticipated to gradually diminish in intensity over the next few days, veering away from Canada and into the Atlantic Ocean, as stated by the National Hurricane Center
This storm caused widespread power outages and battered the coasts of the northeastern US and Atlantic Canada with fierce winds and surging waves. It is projected to shift northeastward over Newfoundland on Sunday afternoon before progressing over the Atlantic on Monday.
Regrettably, one fatality has been linked to Lee’s condition. Officials in Fernandina Beach, Florida, reported the drowning of a 15-year-old due to turbulent wave conditions induced by Hurricane Lee. The teenager was last sighted on Wednesday, gripping a floating raft, which subsequently drifted away. His body was recovered on Thursday, according to Fernandina Beach Police Department Interim Police Chief Jeff Tambasco.
Tropical storm force winds still extend approximately 290 miles from the remnants of Lee’s core on Sunday, as reported by the National Hurricane Center
In Nova Scotia, Canada, around 50,000 customers remain without power, while in New Brunswick, 8,000 are in darkness. Maine experienced gusts of up to 83 mph in Perry and 63 mph in Roque Bluffs, resulting in over 20,000 homes and businesses without power. Another inch of rain is expected in parts of eastern New Brunswick, according to the National Hurricane Center. Authorities advised residents to prepare for potential power outages and encouraged them to stay indoors, anticipating a likely storm surge for coastal communities.
Kyle Leavitt, director of New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization, emphasized, “Once the storm starts, remember please stay at home if at all possible.” States of emergency were declared in Maine and Massachusetts in anticipation of the storm. President Joe Biden has authorized the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to collaborate on disaster relief efforts and necessary emergency measures. Boston’s Logan International Airport witnessed a surge in flight cancellations on Saturday, with 23% of inbound and 24% of outbound flights affected, according to FlightAware, the flight tracking website, as reiterated by the National Hurricane Center.
