House of the Dragon is finally coming our way, with an August release date set.

Last year, a first-look video for the Game of Thrones prequel was released, displaying the show’s look and feel, as well as a new design for the iconic Iron Throne.

A new trailer for House of the Dragon has appeared, hinting at the upcoming brutal Targaryen civil war.

The Iron Throne is occupied by King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), but his wicked brother Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), his daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), and his daughter Lady Alicent Hightower are all vying for control over who should succeed him (Olivia Cooke).

House of the Dragon looks to be a fitting sequel to Game of Thrones, with dragons, brutality, swords, and dark plots.

What is the story behind the House of the Dragon?

House of the Dragon is set during the “Dance of the Dragons,” a civil conflict between Targaryen family members that occurred two centuries before Martin and HBO’s Game of Thrones. Because they are the rulers of Westeros when House begins, their demise had far-reaching consequences, which this new season will explore in greater depth.

Despite the fact that House of the Dragon is a canonical Game of Thrones prequel, adapting material from hundreds of years before the events depicted in the original series, the show’s creative team has stated that it will have its own identity and tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the series. (For more information, see The Game of Thrones Prequel Will Have Its Own Unique Tone.)

House of the Dragonplot

To put it another way, the programme will include all of the political manoeuvring, explicit bloodshed, and enormous CGI dragons that Game of Thrones fans have come to anticipate, but it will still make sense to viewers who haven’t seen the original series.

House of the Dragon is unlikely to include gratuitous violence against women, which has been a source of controversy in the past.

Who is responsible for the production of House of the Dragon?

Ryan Condal, a producer and screenwriter renowned for the TV series Colony and the film Rampage, and George R.R. Martin, the author of the books that inspired Game of Thrones, are the co-creators of House of the Dragon. The showrunners are Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, who helmed six episodes of Game of Thrones, including the Emmy-nominated “Battle of the Bastards.” (Learn more: Go Behind the Scenes of Last Night’s Incredible Game of Thrones Battle.)

House of the Dragon intro

Martin stated on his personal blog in December 2021 that he had seen a rough version of the first episode and that he like it. “It’s dark, forceful, visceral,” he remarked. “Ryan and Miguel have done an incredible job, and the cast… like GAME OF THRONES, most people will only recognise a few of the performers, but I believe you will fall in love with a lot of them.”
