Early Life
Born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971, in Dallas, Texas, she became better known as Erykah Bady as a singer and songwriter. She began performing professionally at the age of four, appearing at places like the Dallas Theater Center and the Black Academy of Arts and Letters.
When she was a child, she initially realized her love for performing music. Following an eight-year absence from the jazz scene, she was featured on a Dallas radio station and heard freestyling among other jazz musicians, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove. It was during this time that she started spelling her name the way she does now.
As a nod to her favorite jazz scatting sound, she chose the surname “Badu” for her own use. Both of these alterations may be traced back to her high school years. As a student at Grambling State University, she earned her bachelor’s degree in theatre and continued her study at Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts.
For this reason, in 1993 she dropped out of college before she could finish her degree. Her relative, Robert “Free” Bradford, was a musician who collaborated with her on a song.
As a duo, they recorded “Country Cousins,” which drew the attention of music executive Kedar Massenburg, who is well known for discovering Erykah Badu. When Badu collaborated with D’Angelo on a duet, she was able to establish her career as a musician thanks to his help.

Music Career
For her part in the rise of the neo-soul sub-genre, Badu is widely recognized. It was between 1997 and 2010 that she published a total of seven studio albums (her debut album, Baduizm, has been certified platinum), which garnered her international renown and worldwide critical praise.
As a fashion statement, Badu’s headwraps, which she wore all the time, were as distinctive as her distinctive music, which fused elements of R&B, hip hop, and jazz into a single cohesive sound. For her musical sensibilities and role as one of the Soulquarians’ founding members, she was compared to jazz great Billie Holiday. She was also known as the “First Lady of Neo-Soul” and the “Queen of Neo-Soul.”
Besides her music career, Badu was a busy tourer from 1997 until 2010. One of the numerous collaborations between Badu and Dave Chappelle, the Dave Chappelle/Badu tour was launched in 2007.
While her music has changed over the years, she has remained a vital part of the hip-hop scene thanks to the influence she has gained from fusing her religious beliefs with the music she creates. Rappers like Kool Herc, Kool DJ Red Alert, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinderella, and Salt ‘n’ Pepa affected Badu as a teen, and her love of the genre has only grown since then.
Personal Life
Since 2006, Badu has been a steadfast vegan, describing vegan meals in her trademark style as “soul food in its purest form To eat soul food is to nourish one’s innermost thoughts and feelings. You’ve got a soul, in my opinion. When you have just good intentions, you are truly pure.” OutKast’s Andre 3000 was her long-term boyfriend from 1995 to 1999; they had a kid named Seven Sirius Benjamin in 1997. Both Puma Sabti Curry and Mars Merkaba Thedford were born as a result of their pregnancy in 2004, respectively.
