Winter fuel payments are annual tax-free benefits that help with heating bills. Like state pensions and benefits, eligible people receive it immediately. People who get housing assistance, council tax reduction, child benefit, or Universal Credit must meet certain conditions to qualify.
The qualifying households should receive a letter in October or November. Apply on the government’s website if you fit the criteria but don’t get paid. If you didn’t receive a letter but think you qualify, claim for winter 2023–2024 by March 31, 2024. Birthdate must be before September 25, 1957, and UK residency must be during the “qualifying week” in September 2023. Those in Switzerland or EEA nations with a genuine UK social security link are exempt. Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta, Portugal, and Spain have greater winter temperatures and are exempt. If you’re hospitalized for over a year, need authorization to visit the UK without public funding, were in prison during the qualifying week, or received specific benefits in a care home between June 26 and September 24, 2023, you’re excluded.
