Urgent IRS Warning: $1,400 Stimulus Scam Sweeping the Nation!

A new scam is making the rounds, tricking people into believing they are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus payment. Scammers are posing as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and sending out fake text messages designed to steal personal and financial information.

How the Scam Works

People receive a text message claiming that they qualify for a $1,400 stimulus check. The message includes a link that appears to lead to an official IRS website. However, this link actually directs victims to a fraudulent website designed to steal sensitive information.

Once on the fake site, users are asked to provide their Social Security number, bank account details, and other personal data. Scammers then use this information to commit identity theft, drain bank accounts, or file fraudulent tax returns.

Authorities, including the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, have warned about this scam, stating that the IRS does not send unsolicited text messages requesting personal or financial information.

How to Spot a Fake IRS Message

The IRS has strict rules about how it communicates with taxpayers. They never:
Send unexpected text messages or emails about payments
Ask for personal or financial information through text or social media
Threaten legal action, arrest, or lawsuits over unpaid taxes

Most official IRS communications come through mailed letters, not random digital messages.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from the IRS, follow these steps:

  • Ignore & Delete: Do not click on any links or reply to the message.
  • Verify Directly: Visit the official IRS website or call their helpline to confirm whether any action is required.
  • Report It: Forward scam texts to phishing@irs.gov and report them to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • Stay Updated: Keep track of official government updates to recognize scams before they spread.

Why This Matters

Scammers are getting more sophisticated in their tactics, and many unsuspecting people fall for these schemes. By staying informed and cautious, you can avoid becoming their next victim.

If you ever receive a message about stimulus payments, always double-check its authenticity. The IRS will never text you out of the blue asking for personal details. Stay alert, protect your information, and spread the word to keep others safe.
