Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

According to Fox 5 News, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), flood victims impacted by the atmospheric river storm and flooding in late January would be eligible for Disaster SNAP benefits. Low-income Californians dealing with the aftermath of powerful storms and power outages are relieved to receive this support. The purpose of the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) is to supply food assistance to households who have suffered food damage or loss as a result of natural disasters. Families of flood victims who satisfy certain requirements, such as meeting income limits during a disaster and having qualifying expenses linked to the disaster can apply for D-SNAP. These families may not normally be eligible for SNAP.

Disaster Declaration and FEMA Assistance for California Flood Victims

President Joe Biden has approved a disaster declaration for citizens of California devastated by the heavy storms and flooding allowing flood victims harmed by the floods on January 22 to seek aid through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). D-SNAP benefit applications will be accepted from March 7-8 and again from March 11–15. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack underlined the USDA’s dedication to making sure individuals impacted by the recent storms receive the required food aid, acknowledging that the situation might not end when the rain stops. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has authorized requests for bulk replacements of benefits to households affected by power outages in particular flood-affected areas, in addition to D-SNAP. In addition, waivers have been given to California Child Care Food Program institutions to permit non-congregate meal service and mealtime modifications. To purchase food at nearby FNS-authorized retail establishments, residents who are eligible for D-SNAP benefits will be given an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. This will be a vital source of assistance while the area recovers from the recent natural disasters.
