Around 9,000 property owners who overpaid their first installment taxes last year will receive nearly $30.5 million in automatic property tax refunds from the Cook County Treasurer.

Automatic Property Tax Refunds: Cook County Homeowners to Receive $30.5M Boost

Refunds are meant to bolster holiday finances. Most homeowners don’t have to file applications or bother with paperwork because it’s automatic. Half of the returns will be paid into property owners’ accounts within three months.

Homeowners, Senior Citizens, Senior Freeze, and Disabled Persons receive automatic reimbursements. The Cook County treasurer’s office reports that 1,900 online property taxpayers will receive $13.1 million in bank deposits. Approximately 4,000 homeowners who paid taxes through a bank/mortgage escrow account will get $8 million in refund checks.

About 2,900 homeowners who paid taxes in cash or by check for $9.3 million will receive an electronic refund or a refund application.
