Sayegh, enthusiastic about the program, compared it to an early Christmas gift for Paterson. Financial aid to the needy is the initiative’s main purpose. Over 6,000 applications were submitted for the relaunch. This huge reaction shows Paterson’s urgent need for economic assistance.
The mayor revealed that former recipients mostly used the money for food, energy expenses, and rent. One participant said the guaranteed income scheme helped her have a real Thanksgiving with her family for the first time.
Sayegh praised Paterson’s unique approach and said cities like Paterson test new approaches to help inhabitants. Lorraine Hicks, a program recipient, said, “It’ll simplify life. I do extras to make money. I can relax now.”
