How to Claim Your 2025 VA DIC Benefits: Everything You Need to Know

The Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) program provides financial support to surviving spouses, children, and dependents of veterans who died in the line of duty or due to service-related conditions. Managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), DIC is a tax-free monthly benefit. For 2025, updated rates and additional allowances are now in effect.

Here’s a detailed look at the current rates, eligibility criteria, and how survivors can apply.

2025 Updated DIC Rates

Starting December 1, 2024, the base monthly DIC payment is $1,653.07 for eligible surviving spouses. Additional amounts may apply based on specific circumstances:

  • 8-Year Provision: If the veteran had a 100% disability rating for at least 8 continuous years before their death and the spouse was married to them during that period, an extra $351.02 is added.
  • Aid and Attendance: Spouses requiring assistance with daily activities are eligible for an additional $409.53 monthly.
  • Housebound Allowance: Spouses confined to their immediate premises due to a disability receive an extra $191.85 per month.
  • Transitional Benefit: Surviving spouses with children under 18 qualify for an additional $350.00 per month for the first two years following the veteran’s death.
  • DIC Apportionment Rate: Each eligible dependent child receives $409.53 per month.

Who Is Eligible for DIC Benefits?

Survivors may qualify for DIC if:

  • The service member died while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.
  • The veteran’s death was due to a service-connected injury or illness.
  • The veteran was rated disabled from service-related conditions for a specific period before their death.

Eligible survivors can apply for DIC benefits through the VA by following these steps:
