Big Changes Coming for SSDI in 2025 – What You Need to Know!

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries are set to see a slight increase in their payments in 2025. Thanks to the 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), the average monthly SSDI payment will rise to approximately $1,580. However, some recipients could receive as much as $4,018 per month, depending on their earnings history.

If you’re wondering whether you qualify for the higher payment or when you’ll get your deposit, here’s everything you need to know.

How SSDI Payments Are Calculated

SSDI payments aren’t a fixed amount for everyone. Instead, they are based on your average indexed monthly earnings (AIME), which considers your highest-earning years. The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a formula called bend points to calculate your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA).

For 2025, the SSA will calculate benefits as follows:

  • 90% of the first $1,226 of your AIME
  • 32% of your AIME from $1,226 to $7,391
  • 15% of your AIME over $7,391

This formula ensures that higher earners receive bigger SSDI payments—up to the maximum benefit of $4,018 per month.

Do You Qualify for SSDI Benefits?

Not everyone qualifies for SSDI, even if they have a disability. To be eligible, you must meet two main requirements:

  1. Medical Eligibility – Your disability must prevent you from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA) and be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
  2. Work Credits – SSDI is based on your work history. In 2025, you earn one work credit for every $1,810 in wages or self-employment income, with a maximum of four credits per year.

The number of credits you need depends on your age:

  • A 50-year-old requires 28 work credits
  • A 60-year-old needs 38 work credits

If you don’t have enough credits, you may not qualify for SSDI benefits.

When Will You Get Your SSDI Payment in 2025?

SSDI payments are issued based on your birth date, following this schedule:

  • 1st – 10th of the month → Payment on the second Wednesday
  • 11th – 20th of the month → Payment on the third Wednesday
  • 21st – 31st of the month → Payment on the fourth Wednesday

For example, if your birthday falls between January 1st and 10th, you’ll receive your SSDI payment on January 8th, 2025.

What’s the Maximum SSDI Benefit in 2025?

While the average SSDI payment will be $1,580 per month, some recipients will qualify for much higher amounts. The maximum SSDI benefit in 2025 is $4,018 per month, which is only available to those who had a high-paying job for many years before becoming disabled.
