A farmer’s humble doorstop, used for three decades, turned out to be a meteorite worth a staggering $100,000. The Michigan man, who had the meteorite in his possession since the 1980s, discovered its extraordinary value after seeking the expertise of a geology professor at Central Michigan University. Initially given to the man’s children for show-and-tell, the rock landed on Earth in the 1930s and is now recognized as the sixth-largest meteorite ever found in Michigan.

The meteorite, weighing 22 pounds and composed of 88.5% iron and 11.5% nickel, had served as an unsuspecting doorstop in the farmer’s home. Little did he know that the rock, acquired with the property, had extraterrestrial origins dating back to the 1930s. Its unique journey from space to a farmhouse door garnered attention when the owner sought professional advice.
Upon inspection by Mona Sirbescu, a geology professor at Central Michigan University, the rock’s extraterrestrial nature became evident. Professor Sirbescu, who had never encountered a meteorite in 18 years of examining rocks, confirmed its authenticity. The Smithsonian Institution verified the find, solidifying its place as a valuable and rare meteorite.
The Smithsonian Institution’s acknowledgment adds prestige to the meteorite’s discovery, underscoring its rarity and scientific significance. The rock’s composition, featuring iron and nickel, aligns with the characteristics of celestial bodies from space.
