1 Million Americans Getting Surprise Payments—Are You on the List?

If you thought you’d seen the last of stimulus checks, think again! The IRS is issuing surprise payments to about one million Americans who missed out on previous Economic Impact Payments (EIPs). These payments, up to $1,400 per person, are automatically going to individuals who didn’t claim the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on their 2021 tax returns.

What’s the Recovery Rebate Credit?

The Recovery Rebate Credit was introduced to help people claim any remaining stimulus money they were entitled to but didn’t receive during the pandemic. Unfortunately, many taxpayers left this section blank or entered the wrong information on their 2021 tax returns, meaning they missed out on money they qualified for.

To fix this, the IRS is stepping in to issue these payments automatically. This means eligible individuals won’t need to file additional paperwork or amended tax returns.

Who Qualifies for These Payments?

The surprise payments are for people who:

  • Filed a 2021 tax return but didn’t claim the RRC.
  • Were eligible for stimulus checks based on their income and filing status but didn’t receive the full amount.

Each eligible person could receive up to $1,400. For families, this amount is multiplied based on the number of qualifying dependents.

When Will the Payments Arrive?

The IRS started processing these surprise payments in December 2024. Most recipients should receive their checks or direct deposits by the end of January 2025. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll also get a notification letter confirming the payment.

What About Non-Filers?

Even if you didn’t file a 2021 tax return, you might still be able to claim these funds. The IRS is urging those with low or no income to file a return before April 15, 2025, to get any credits they’re entitled to. This includes the stimulus money you may have missed.

A Quick Recap of COVID Stimulus Payments

Here’s a refresher on the three rounds of stimulus payments issued during the pandemic:

  1. March 2020: Up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per child under the CARES Act.
  2. December 2020: Up to $600 per person through the Consolidated Appropriations Act.
  3. March 2021: Up to $1,400 per person under the American Rescue Plan Act.

The goal of these payments was to help people during financial hardships caused by COVID-19. However, millions missed out, which is why the IRS is now issuing these surprise payments.

What Should You Do Now?

The good news is, most eligible taxpayers don’t need to do anything—the IRS is handling everything. However, if you didn’t file your 2021 tax return or think you might have missed out, now is the time to take action. File a tax return as soon as possible to ensure you get any money owed to you.
