Who is Lisa, Todd Beamer’s wife?

Lisa Beamer, Todd’s wife, became an instant symbol for 9/11 victims’ families. Together, they authored the book Let’s Roll! The courageous deeds of her spouse were chronicled in her book Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage.

Lisa Beamer, who was born in April of 1969 in Albany, New York, attended and graduated from Wheaton College in 1991. The two met in college and were married on May 14, 1994. However, her spouse was on United Flight 93, the fourth plane hijacked that day.

On September 11, 2001, Beamer boarded a United Airlines flight in Newark, New Jersey, en route to a business meeting in San Francisco. The 32-year-old planned to return home that night via direct flight.

But after 46 minutes in the air, terrorists grabbed control of the airliner. The pilot told to the passengers that the plane would be rerouting to Washington, DC because “we have a bomb on board, so sit.” Unlike the other passengers, Beamer kept his cool under intense pressure and led the charge to overtake the hijacker’s control panel.

As a result of her work in the aftermath of the disaster, Lisa gained widespread recognition and appeared in more than 200 media outlets in the six months following the attacks. At a memorial service, she was presented by President George W. Bush.

Doug Macmillan, a friend of Todd’s, quit his work soon after the attacks so that he and Todd’s wife, Lisa, could devote themselves full-time to helping the children of those who perished on Flight 93.

What did Todd Beamer say to Lisa on the phone?

Passengers learned that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center and that another had hit the Pentagon in Virginia as word trickled out from the few who had phones. But Todd contacted Airfone instead, and after explaining the situation to operator Lisa Jefferson (not Lisa as in Todd’s family), he was connected to his family.

Others on board joined Jefferson and Beamer in reciting the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23. Beamer’s voice rose somewhat as the plane began to drop, but he remained cool throughout the call.

“Lisa, Lisa!” he yelled. I’m still around, Todd,” Jefferson reassured him. If you need me, I’ll be right here. Beamer and the other passengers and staff members on board the plane discussed and ultimately decided to attempt a cockpit takeover. “If I don’t make it, please call my family and let them know how much I love them,” he begged Jefferson. Beamer was heard asking the others, “Are you ready?” Then let’s get this show on the road.

That was reportedly the last thing Jefferson overheard from Beamer. Later, Jefferson would say, “His voice was devoid of any stress.” “In fact, he seemed so calm that I started to question the seriousness and legitimacy of his call.”

To this day, hundreds of lives have been spared because Flight 93 was diverted before it could reach the nation’s capital. Even now, two decades after 9/11, nobody knows for sure what the hijackers on Flight 93 were trying to accomplish.
