In a film that is essentially a year-long swordfight between Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel, one could choose any of the duels. It’s a long-running duel between two opposing French lieutenants in the 1800s.
The first feature film directed by Ridley Scott was a character study about how a misunderstanding of a “slight” turns into a battle for honor. Carradine and Keitel spent months honing their sword skills, and it shows in their flawless execution of every dueling scene.
1. Seven Samurai (1954)
When farmers hire samurai to help them defeat bandits in Akira Kurosawa’S masterpiece Seven Samurai, there is a lot of swordplay and many vicious duels.
Samurai Kyuzo and an unnamed bandit are two of the best examples of this type of dynamic in the works. The fight takes place in the middle of a field, far from the other participants in the conflict, making it feel like a private duel. Like a zen master, Kyuzo never lets the bandit get the better of him in battle. He stares at the bandit directly in the eyes with each strike, eventually frightening his adversary into submission.
2. The Three Musketeers (1973)
The Three Musketeers, the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas, has had numerous film adaptations, but Richard Lester’s is by far the most well-liked.
Michael York portrays D’Artagnan, the aspiring Musketeer who joins the musketeers in their fight against Cardinal Richelieu, played by Charlton Heston, his henchman Rochefort played by Christopher Lee, and the Cardinal’s band of ruthless guards in The Three Musketeers
3. The Adventures Of Robin Hood (1938)
Flynn and Rathbone teamed up for what is considered to be the best Robin Hood movie of all time. An action-packed tale of the legendary outlaw Robin Hood is brought to life in vibrant technicolor in the film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
4. Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)
Kill Bill was inspired by the samurai and kung fu films that Quentin Tarantino adores. As seen in Vol. I, Uma Thurman’s character “Bride” seeks vengeance on those responsible for her death.
In Japan, she is confronted by “The Crazy 88s”—a gang of black-suited samurai gangsters.
5. Captain Blood (1935)
One of the greatest swashbuckling tales, Captain Blood, was directed by Michael Curtiz in 1935. Dr. Errol Flynn, played by Errol Flynn, is an English doctor who becomes a pirate after being falsely accused of being a traitor by a magistrate.
Captain Blood (1935)
A crooked nobleman falsely accuses Rob Roy MacGregor of treason in the 1995 film Rob Roy, which stars Liam Nesson as the accused. Rob Roy, played by Tim Roth, goes on to become an outlaw and seek vengeance on the man who destroyed his life. The film is a grand epic of historical romance and action, featuring a stellar cast and thrilling action sequences.
6. Rob Roy (1995)
Tyrone Power, who played Zorro, is still considered the greatest swashbuckler of all time. While battling a corrupt government in Mexico in the 1940 film The Mark of Zorro, actor Tyrone Power plays the legendary swordsman Zorro.
A duel to the death between Captain Esteban Pasquale (Basil Rathbone) and Zorro/Don Diego takes place in the final scene of the film. Rathbone was a skilled swordsman, and Power was no slouch either. Fight choreography of this level is rarely seen in action.
7. The Mark Of Zorro (1940)
The “riddle of the steel” is answered in this film, which is a true testament to the mythos surrounding sword fights. As promised, John Milius and Oliver Stone’s film adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s famous character was a bloodbath.
A lot of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian training went into making him look like the powerful warrior we see on screen. A desert of rocks serves as the stage for Conan’s final showdown with the man who murdered his parents when he was a boy, following many epic sword fights. Stuntmen Milius and his crew put on one of the best sword fights ever seen on film in this scene.
8. Conan The Barbarian (1982)
Taking inspiration from both Eiichi Kudo’s original 1963 film and the works of Akira Kurosawa, Takeshi Miike remade Eiichi Kudo’s classic 13 Assassins. A band of samurai warriors bands together to take down a corrupt warlord, despite the fact that they will almost certainly die in the process.
This film is filled with breathtaking sword fights. Shinzaemon’s duel with Hanbei is the most exciting. Dueling in the mud, the two men go at it one after the other, slugging it out one after the other. The audience is enthralled by the visceral quality of this fight, which takes place mainly in close quarters and ends in a bloody decapitation.
