Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the most eagerly awaited animated comic book film in a long time, and now we have to wait even longer. But how much longer must we wait for the sequel to the best-animated picture Oscar winner of 2018? What happens in the movie? We learned a lot at CinemaCon.
Given the title, there are certain to be more unique interpretations of Spider-Man, but there are still enough of hints strewn about to help construct a clearer image. Furthermore, the live-action Spider-Man: No Way Home is expected to feature numerous incarnations of Spider-Man, making Spider-Verse feel more canonical than ever.
With its fantastic mix of humor, motivating themes, and eye-grabbingly vivid visuals, the original Spider-Verse animated film swiftly swung its way into the hearts of fans everywhere.
Here’s all we know about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, including its release date, cast, and newly confirmed characters.
Kemp Powers (Soul, One Night in Miami) and Justin K. Thompson (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) have joined Joaquim Dos Santos as directors for Spider-Verse 2. (Spider-Verse 1).
The release date for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Even though animated films take longer to develop than live-action pictures, Sony Pictures has set a release date for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The series will be expected on June 2, 2023, if everything goes according to plan.
Confused? Do you recall the date of October 7, 2022? We’re unhappy, too, as Sony announced this postponement on April 21.
Oh, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the third film in the franchise will be titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. March 29, 2024, is the date.
Due to a series of Covid-19-related movie delays, the originally stated April 8, 2022 date has been moved back. The Spider-Verse Twitter account revealed the date in November, along with a GIF that teases which new Spider-Man characters are on the way (more on that later). The date was further solidified when Christopher Miller, one half of the writer-director pair, tweeted it along with the message “we’re coming back.”
Sony has yet to announce a release date for any of the anticipated spin-off films presently in development, but a November 2018 report in the Hollywood Reporter stated that Sony was interested in making an all-female adventure featuring Spider-Gwen from another reality. However, don’t hold your breath for it before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 in 2022.

First look and trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
This trailer debuted a few weeks before Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it provided us a new look at the animated Spider-Man 2099. (to be voiced by Oscar Isaac).
Given how it may handle with multiversal logic, we could see something akin to a Spider-Verse 2-inspired end-credits scene at the end of No Way Home.
The cast of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
There were plenty of noteworthy characters in the first Into the Spider-Verse, so it’s safe to assume that the sequel will have even more. Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld will return as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey, respectively, among the returning cast.
Issa Rae will play Spider-Woman, and Oscar Isaac will portray Spider-Man 2099, as previously stated.
What about a villain to oppose Miles and the gang? Rodney Rothman, one of the original film’s co-directors, informed Screen Rant in April that Katheryn Han’s Dock Ock would play a significantly larger role in the sequel. “We absolutely think of Liv as someone who isn’t gone from the plot,” he said, implying that she won’t be playing second fiddle to someone like Kingpin like she used to.
Regardless of whether or not Ock will ascend to become the new Spiderverse crew’s major bad guy, expect to see more of her in the future. Any additional villains that survived the previous film, such as Tombstone, Scorpion, and Green Goblin, are likely to return.
The story of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 will center on Miles and Gwen’s romance, according to producer Amy Pascal in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Sony revealed more about Gwen’s plans at CinemaCon. The Hollywood Reporter reported that “The scene opens in Gwen Stacy’s dimension, with Gwen and her father, the police chief, on the phone. Vulture is followed by Gwen. From another universe, O’Hara’s Spider-Man and Spider-woman/Jessica Drew arrive.
Gwen’s father arrives at the scene and attempts to arrest her for the death of Peter Parker, but she removes the mask and reveals her true identity. Then we cut to Miles Morales’ world, where we see Miles at his school’s parent-teacher meeting.”
A Spider-Women spin-off (authored by Bek Smith) is also in the works, according to Pascal. We anticipate that Spider-Verse 2 will set the stage for that film. Spider-Gwen, Cindy Moon (Silk), and Jessica Drew will play key roles in the film (Spider-Woman).
