If you’ve heard of Jeffrey Dahmer’s horrifying acts, you might be wondering how he was apprehended by the police after he killed and dismembered over a dozen people.
Between 1978 and 1991, American serial killer and sex offender Dahmer—also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal and the Milwaukee Monster—killed and dismembered 17 men and boys in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area.
When police discovered that several of Dahmer’s killings contained necrophilia—the sexual act with a corpse—cannibalism—eating another human—and the storage of his victims’ body parts—typically their skeletons—they gave him the moniker “the Milwaukee Cannibal.”
What Led to Jeffrey Dahmer’s Acquisition?
On February 17, 1992, Dahmer, who had been given borderline and schizotypal personality disorders diagnoses, was found guilty of 15 of the 16 murders he had committed in Wisconsin and given a 15-year sentence.
For a different murder he committed in Ohio, Dahmer received a 16th life sentence in 1978. At the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, where he was a prisoner, Christopher Scarver beat Dahmer to death on November 28, 1994.
There were other instances of police and government blunders that allowed Dahmer to avoid punishment in the events leading up to the serial killer’s capture.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is still the most-watched movie on Netflix over two weeks after it was released. The play has drawn criticism from the relatives of his victims, who have shouted against it, while many commentators have praised it highly. Millions of people have watched it and will continue to do so.
The arrest makes a special effort to highlight the mistakes made by the authorities that made it impossible to apprehend Dahmer sooner. One example of this is when police disregard complaints made to them by residents of a black neighborhood about a young, drugged boy being cared for by Dahmer.
On July 22, 1991, he was ultimately apprehended. Tracy Edwards, one of his intended victims, tricked Dahmer and managed to flee. Edwards stopped a police cruiser and persuaded the policemen to return him to Dahmer’s home. Weapons, images of decapitated bodies, and a head in the fence were discovered by the police inside. Following his arrest, Dahmer admitted to the killings.
What Transpired Following His Eventual Capture?
In 1992, Dahmer was found guilty of 15 charges of murder and given 15 life sentences; a later life sentence for an Ohio murder from 1978 was also added.
The “Milwaukee Butcher” was killed by a fellow prisoner by the name of Christopher Scarver after a brief period of incarceration. The three were charged with cleaning certain rooms in the jail together with another prisoner, Jesse Anderson. Scarver struck Dahmer in the skull with a metal bar in an unguarded moment. With Anderson, he did the same thing afterward.
