Soon, the final book in the His Dark Materials trilogy will be published. The third season of the popular BBC/HBO series will be based on Phillip Pullman’s The Amber Spyglass, the third book in the trilogy. The filming of the third season began earlier in 2021, with star James McAvoy confirming in June that work had resumed in Wales following a delay due to COVID.
He mentioned Wales doing this to BBC Breakfast: “We’re doing that down in Wales at the moment.” In a couple of hours, I’ll be travelling back down there to film a major set piece involving my snow leopard, Stelmaria, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to return for season three!
The third season has wrapped production at this point, though. From the show’s official Twitter on November 26: “It’s time to close the books on the six-year adventure through the Worlds of #HisDarkMaterials. Lastly, Season 3 has come to an end “.
If So, When Can We Expect It to Be Available?
The premiere date for His Dark Materials Season 3 has not yet been determined. However, filming wrapped up at the end of November 2021, and the project is now in post-production. Following an incredible six-year journey through the realms of His Dark Materials, the official His Dark Materials account has tweeted that the final chapter has been written. We can no longer watch Season 3.
It has been an incredible six year journey through the Worlds of #HisDarkMaterials, but it’s time to close the doors on the final chapter.

The past two seasons have been featured prominently on the winter schedules of both the BBC and HBO. Beginning in November and running through the end of December, they concluded just before the holiday season. Given the amount of post-production work involved, such as the CGI needed to generate all of the characters’ daemons, we predict a similar release date of 2022.

Plot Suggestions For His Dark Materials Season 3
The third and final novel in Pullman’s trilogy, The Amber Spyglass, serves as the inspiration for the third season of His Dark Materials. Lyra is being hunted by the Magisterium because the theocracy has decreed she must die to prevent a recurrence of Adam and Eve’s transgression.
All of this takes place against the epic backdrop of the war between Asriel’s army and the armies of heaven, so the stakes couldn’t be higher. Not to mention the likely meaning of the Season 2 post-credits scene, in which Lyra and Will Parry fly to the World of the Dead to find Roger.
The book also delves into the angels’ backstory, providing insight into how they attained their current level of might. Even though the book has been on store shelves for 20 years, we obviously won’t be giving away the ending here. It’s probably safe to assume that some viewers will shed a tear or two at the end of the series finale.
During an interview with The One Show, James McAvoy hinted at an impending battle in the show’s final season. To which she said, “What can I tell you? McAvoy stated on The One Show that “it is war.” It gets really down and dirty at the end of the second season, with a declaration of war against the Kingdom of Heaven and all it entails. But it’s really about a little girl and a little boy at heart… and not the inflated-head adults.”
BBC and HBO could simply adapt Phillip Pullman’s prequel trilogy The Book of Dust into a new series. The second novel in the series follows up with Lyra 20 years later, and the cosmos grows as a result. Maybe Dafne Keen may return for more, but then again, she might not.
Season Three of The Cast of His Dark Materials
Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson‘s recurring roles as Lyra and Will, respectively, as well as those of Ruth Wilson’s Mrs Coulter, Simone Kirby’s Mary Malone, Ruta Gedmintas’ Serafina Pekkala, and Will Keen’s Father (or rather, Cardinal) MacPhail, all seem likely to continue. According to Wilson, her antagonistic character “goes on a wonderful journey” in the third season. I’ve been itching to take on Mrs Coulter’s role again.
Wilson spoke to the public at the BFI and Radio Times Television Festival during the His Dark Materials: Creating Mrs Coulter panel, “It’s quite interesting since this season we make a reference to her mother.” The clothes that are sent to Mrs Coulter are believed to have belonged to her mother. My mental association of [her] with the teaching authority of the Church’s Magisterium is strong.
Mrs Coulter’s mother had deep religious convictions. As a result, the item symbolises patriarchy and regulations to her. As a result, I believe Mrs Coulter’s mother always felt let down by her. Other than that, Kit Connor, who played Heartstopper’s antagonist, will be back to provide the voice of Lyra’s daemon, Pantalaimon.
Lord Asriel, played by James McAvoy in the first season, plays a greater part in the novel on which the third season is based, thus he is returning for the show. He was only briefly seen in the second season (in the finale).
In season 2, the character was supposed to get his own episode, but the Covid-19 outbreak forced producers to scrap the plan. Similarly, Joe Tandberg’s Iorek Byrnison, the bear king, will likely have a larger role in season three after being sidelined for the majority of season two. Agent Salmakia (Sian Clifford, “Fleabag”) and Commander Roke (Jonathan Aris, “Sherlock”) will play spies for the Gallivespians.
