Executive produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, two natives of Boston, the Showtime thriller “City on a Hill” takes place during the emergence of organized crime in the early 1990s, when law enforcement is more inclined to look the other way, if not actively take part in it. Both Damon and Affleck are native Bostonians. Jackie Rohr (Kevin 27Bacon), a sleazy but sincere FBI veteran, and former Brooklyn lawyer DeCourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge) create a collaboration to bring justice to the community of Beantown.
City on a Hill” has enough to please fans of The Departed, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, and Affleck’s own Charlestown-set thriller, “The Town.” In this film, you’ll hear a lot of Boston slang, drink a lot, and experience some intense robberies. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show’s first season had a 76% approval rating, while the show’s second season was commended by an AV Club critic, who said the show “begins its sophomore session with the blatant assurance of Jackie Rohr.” It is anticipated that the second season will air in March of 2021.
Here’s everything we know so far about “City on a Hill’s” third season.
A release date for the third season of “City On a Hill”
The expected release date of City on Hill‘s third season will premiere on July 24, 2022. There will be a total of eight episodes in this season. Just weeks before the renewal announcement, the second season of the show came to a finale. But based on the strong critical reception it received and the popularity of its actors Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge, it seemed an obvious conclusion that the series would be renewed.
Fans won’t have to wait nearly as long for Season 3 as they did for Seasons 1 and 2.
Deadline reports that production on the Showtime drama’s third season will begin in New York City at the end of 2021, coinciding with the renewal announcement. As of late January 2022, according to a video update from the set released by Bacon on Instagram, filming appears to be ongoing.

Who Will Be in the Third Season Cast of “City on a Hill”?
This season’s “City on a Hill” main cast is all but guaranteed to return. We now know that Kevin Bacon is back as Jackie Rohr because of his Instagram activity. Sleeping is a comforting option as well. In Season 3, Aldis Hodge, Lauren E. Banks, and Jill Hennessey will resume their roles as DeCourcy Ward, Siobhan Quay, and Jenny Rohr. In Season 2, Mark Ryder reprised his role as Father Doyle, a character who appeared frequently and is set to return in Season 3.
However, Amanda Clayton’s Cathy Ryan appears to have departed Boston and the show forever in Season 2’s conclusion “Pax Bostonia,” so it’s unlikely that she’ll return. Due to the tragic deaths of her gang member sons, Anton and Kelvin, Grace Campbell, Pernel Walker’s activist character, may have played some sort of role in the story. It appears that both character arcs have ended, but we won’t know for sure until Season 3.
Season 3 of City on a Hill, what’s the storyline about?
Many of the characters in “Pax Bostonia,” the penultimate episode of Season 2, appear to be at a standstill, while others are searching for a way forward. Siobhan (Lauren E. Banks) looks to be working for the ACLU in Season 3, much to the chagrin of her husband DeCourcy (Aldis Hodge), and their professional spat is sure to continue.
Meanwhile, FBI Agent Jackie Rohr (Kevin Bacon) threw his badge into the lake in “Dirty Harry” fashion after hurting his career at the OPR conference. If the agent decides to quit the Bureau in Season 3, he may go even further into corruption or possibly abandon the Bureau altogether. It would be interesting to watch Jackie as a renegade agent after spending so much time riding the line between corruption and the law.
Both the IRA and the Catholic Church’s corruption were presented in Season 2 as storylines that might be skillfully explored in Season 3 given how relevant they are to Boston’s history. Just in case you missed any episodes, Hulu has both seasons of the show available to watch.
