The popular Apple Music reality show, which is based on a viral segment from CBS’ The Late Late Show With James Corden, has been renewed for a fifth season and will be available on Apple TV+ alongside the rest of Apple’s original shows.

In 2016, Apple Music put the project up for bidding, ahead of the development of Apple’s Worldwide Video Programming business and the debut of Apple TV+ in November 2019. On the Apple TV app and Apple Music, the first four seasons of Carpool Karaoke: The Series are still available.

When the new fifth season comes on Apple TV+, they’ll move to their new home. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Carpool Karaoke franchise, including the Apple series and the Late Late Show segment, has been on hiatus, with attempts underway to bring it back safely.

For each of its first three seasons, Carpool Karaoke received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series. It is nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama, or Variety Series for its fourth season.

Carpool Karaoke

Carpool Karaoke began as a frequent part on The Late Late Show with James Corden, in which the host Corden would drive around with a celebrity or celebrities, singing music together while they drove around. In 2016, Apple Music picked up the segment and transformed it into a stand-alone series, which debuted in 2017.

In August 2021, the fifth season was announced, along with the series’ move to Apple TV+. Will Smith, John Cena, Shaquille O’Neal, Keegan-Michael Key, and Rob Gronkowski are just a few of the celebrities who have been on the show previously.

Origin

Corden said the piece was inspired by a Gavin & Stacey-themed spoof he did for the British charity television program Red Nose Day 2011 in which he sang along with George Michael in a car.

Corden included a 6-minute 45-second Carpool Karaoke session with singer-songwriter Gary Barlow of Take That in his 2014 documentary When Corden Met Barlow, which aired on BBC One.

Ben Winston helmed the documentary. According to Corden “Ben Winston and I have always thought there was something incredibly delightful about seeing someone very, very famous sing one of their songs in a normal setting. We had this brilliant idea: Los Angeles, traffic, and the carpool lane—maybe we could make it work.” When Corden showed Mariah Carey the George Michael clip, she agreed to be the show’s first host.

Corden does not always drive the vehicle while filming; instead, it is pulled, according to a 2020 report. Corden explained that they have to stop because of safety concerns—for example, for a dance routine or costume change—and identified five examples, accounting for around 5% of the series to date: Meghan Trainor, Migos, Cardi B, Chance the Rapper, and Justin Bieber (3rd time). He also mentioned that the whole thing is just for fun because he is already at work and doesn’t need to carpool, plus the roadways he drives don’t have carpool lanes.

Who will appear in season 5 of Carpool Karaoke?

Simu Liu, who starred in Shang-Chi and the Seven Rings, is matched up with Jessica Henwick, who played Neo in The Matrix Resurrections. Murray Bartlett, Alexandra Daddario, and Sydney Sweeney, who starred in HBO’s successful Max series White Lotus, return for the new series.
