Judge Compares Capitol Riot to Banana Republics

According to CBS News, Adam Johnson, the man who took Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lectern during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot has been sentenced. He’ll spend 75 days in prison pay a $5,000 fine and do 200 hours of community service. Johnson admitted his actions were very stupid and showed no anger toward Pelosi.

Judge Walton’s Warning

Judge Reggie B. Walton compared the Capitol riot to events in banana republics. He warned that if such behavior isn’t stopped the country could face a similar situation as seen in Ukraine. Johnson pleaded guilty to entering a restricted area but said he wasn’t violent.

Prosecutors said Johnson shouldn’t profit from his crime. They pointed out his good financial situation. Johnson’s lawyers said he’s sorry for his part in the riot. They said the violence goes against what he believes.
