The American philosopher, author, and podcast host Samuel Benjamin Harris was born on April 9, 1967. The scope of his writings is vast, encompassing such diverse themes as philosophy, religion, ethics, free will, neuroscience, meditation, psychedelics, political theory, terrorism, and AI.
Career
Harris is one of the “Four Horsemen” of New Atheism, together with Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Daniel Dennett, recognized for their criticism of religion and, in particular, Islam.
The End of Faith (2004), Harris’s debut book, was awarded the PEN/Martha Albrand Prize for First Nonfiction and spent 33 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. Six more books have followed: 2006’s Letter to a Christian Nation, 2010’s The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values, 2011’s long-form essay Lying, 2012’s short book Free Will, 2014’s Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion, and 2015’s Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue (co-written with British writer Maajid Nawaz). Harris’s books have been translated into more than 20 different tongues.

Controversy
On Thursday, neurologist Sam Harris caused a stir on Twitter with his remarks regarding Hunter Biden, in which he compared the importance of the latter’s supposed laptop controversy to the harm that Donald Trump may do to “democracy.”
In a video clip that has gone viral on Twitter with over 2.1 million views, Harris tells broadcasters Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster, “Hunter Biden really could have had the corpses of children in his basement, I would not have noticed.”
A New York Post article published shortly before the 2020 election publicized emails purportedly showing Hunter Biden arranging a meeting between a Ukrainian business associate and his father in April 2015, and urging Biden’s “influence” in May 2014. Since then, President Joe Biden’s son has been the subject of repeated controversies.

Facebook and Twitter lowered the post’s visibility in an effort to curb the spread of the news, which only increased its already considerable notoriety.
Harris stated in the 90-minute podcast episode titled “Trump, Religion, Wokeness” that Hunter Biden’s conduct should not be compared with those of the former president who is currently embroiled in multiple legal fights, including charges of hiding confidential documents at his Florida home.

Sam Harris‘ statements were in answer to the hosts’ questions on why he broke ranks with many former friends over Trump and why he cheered Twitter’s ban of the former president.
“However extensive Joe Biden’s criminality may be—and we can go down that rabbit hole forever and realize that he’s collecting kickbacks from Hunter Biden’s business in Ukraine or anywhere else, or China—it is negligible compared to the corruption we know Trump is participating in. Similar to how a firefly reacts to the sun, “said Harris over the course of the interview.
When compared to Trump University, he continued, “it doesn’t even stack up.” In my opinion, “Trump University” is far more scandalous than anything that could be found on Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Kisin followed up with Harris, asking if he was okay with a conspiracy after Harris said that the social media platforms restricting the reach of the New York Post report was “a left-wing conspiracy to deny the presidency to Donald Trump that was merited.”

On Thursday afternoon, Harris released a statement through Twitter, admitting that he didn’t communicate “particularly clearly” in his comments but maintaining that he “was essentially advocating for a principle of self-defense (where there’s a continuum of proportionate force that is permissible and necessary to use).”
