The Kevin O’Connell era of the Minnesota Vikings began with a bang as they defeated the Green Bay Packers 23-7 on opening day.
Together, quarterback Kirk Cousins and wide receiver Justin Jefferson dominated the Packer’s secondary, with Jefferson hauling in nine passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns on short and intermediate routes.
With Sunday’s victory, O’Connell joined Brad Childress and Mike Zimmer as the only other Vikings head coaches to win their first game in charge.
Not only did O’Connell win his first game as head coach, but he did so by defeating the Green Bay Packers. That made him the first head coach to do so since Mike Tice in 2002. Let’s hope the O’Connell period remains as successful as it has been so far.
Who Is the Vikings Head Coach?
American football coach and player Kevin William O’Connell (born May 25, 1985) was hired on February 16, 2022, to lead the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL).
Former Aztec quarterback O’Connell was picked by the Patriots in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Prior to his retirement in 2012, O’Connell also played for the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and San Diego Chargers.

Career
O’Connell got the second-fastest time in the 40-yard sprint at the 2008 NFL Combine, at 4.61 seconds, behind only University of San Diego quarterback Josh Johnson. With their third pick (94th overall) in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots picked O’Connell.
In the 2008 preseason, O’Connell scored a touchdown on a rushing play for the Patriots against the New York Giants in the fourth quarter, but the team still lost, 19-14.
On September 21, 2008, he made his first NFL appearance in the fourth quarter against the Miami Dolphins, completing three of his first four passes.
After starting quarterback Tom Brady was injured in a preseason game on August 28, 2009, after O’Connell threw two interceptions and completed only three of his ten passing attempts in the second half, the Patriots released him on August 30.
The Patriots would not elaborate on their decision to cut O’Connell, who was competing with undrafted rookie quarterback Brian Hoyer of Michigan State, and veteran quarterback Andrew Walter, who was signed by the team after being released by the Oakland Raiders.
Personal Life
Kevin is in charge of one of the best teams in the NFL as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. In 2010, he wed the love of his life, Leah O’Connell, and they have been together since. Leah O’Connell sells nutritional supplements for both the Bay Club Company and Panacea Scientific, where she holds the position of “supplement sales specialist.”
Kevin has been rather tight-lipped about his and Leah’s romance, with only a few details disclosed about their first date and Kevin’s vague recollections of their subsequent dates.
Kevin and Leah are in the midst of the most wonderful time of their lives: raising their three lovely children, a son, Kaden, a girl, Kolten, and a son, Quinn.
