At Tuesday’s Blind Auditions, new coach Camila Cabello was startled to recognise a familiar song.
Camila immediately recognised Tanner Howe’s rendition of her ex’s song “Mercy” when he performed for the coaches.
“Could it be that… Is Shawn possibly in the sky? “her colleague’s coaches listened on, she asked. My first thought was, “Is Shawn onstage?”
Camila Didn’t Turn Her Chair for Tanner
The other coaches had him work for it, but John Legend, Gwen Stefani, and Blake Shelton all turned theirs because they felt the song was too personal for Camila to turn his chair.
It was mutual: “I know him better than everyone in this room.” To paraphrase, “Perhaps you sounded a little too much like him, and that’s why I didn’t turn around.”
She said, “Obviously, he has a beautiful voice, I adore this song, but I would be fascinated when you pick your coach [to see] you really distinguish yourself.”
Tanner acknowledged the criticism and said his intention to move closer to musically “being in [Shawn’s] lane.”
Camila raised an eyebrow as her fellow coaches laughed at her observation: “I was in his lane…deeply.” “She’s trying to make things as awkward as possible,” John laughed.
Huntingdon Beach-born and raised Gwen finally decided to join Anaheim’s Team Gwen thanks to “the strength of Orange County.”
