Among the thousands of people waiting to see King Charles outside the Welsh Parliament, he immediately approached one woman and spoke with her for what seemed like an eternity.
On Friday, Jan Lewis used a single word—”Myddfai”—to get his attention. There are less than 400 inhabitants in this village in Carmarthenshire, but it has special meaning to him because it was his longtime home.
This begs the question: Will the neighbourhood now see Prince William more often at church on Sundays than at his new home?
Prince Charles was often spotted taking strolls in the neighbourhood when he was in office, and he even played a role in altering the design of a new village hall that had been deemed too “rugby ball” in appearance.
The new King’s enthusiasm for Wales was palpable when he spoke with Mrs Lewis, 62, of neighbouring Powys County following their meeting at the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay. Since her time in Myddfai, she claims to have shouted at him.
“He claimed to have planted many of the trees and shrubs (at his village home). To spend even a brief moment with him was a delight “A further remark made by Mrs Lewis. Indeed, the King has planted numerous organic crops on land he purchased 15 years ago at his Llwynywermod estate, not far from Llandovery.
After what he called a “30-year journey to find a Welsh home,” he finally did. But what exactly did he do with it?
Who Is Charles III?
British and 14 other Commonwealth monarchies have Charles III (Charles Philip Arthur George, born 14 November 1948) as their monarch. After his mother, Elizabeth II, died on September 8, 2022, he became monarch. He is 73 years old, making him the oldest person to ascend to the British throne and the longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
Charles’s maternal grandfather, King George VI, was in charge of Buckingham Palace when he was born.
His grandfather passed away while Charles was only three years old, and his mother ascended the crown. After being named Prince of Wales in 1958, Charles was formally invested as such in 1969. Just like his father, the Duke of Edinburgh, he attended Cheam and Gordonstoun schools.
After that, Charles enrolled at Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia, and stayed there for a year, mostly focusing on the Timbertop campus. Charles joined the Air Force and the Navy after graduating from the University of Cambridge with a Bachelor of Arts in 1971 and served until 1976. He wed Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and they had two children together: William and Harry.
After both partners had extramarital encounters that became public knowledge, the marriage split up in 1996. One year later, Diana passed away. Having been together for many years, Charles finally tied the knot with Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

As King Edward III’s eldest son, he was granted the titles of Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, and Baron of Renfrew by royal charter in 1337. In order to become a jet pilot, he flew to the Royal Air Force College at Cranwell on March 8th, 1971. He decided to pursue a career in the navy after graduating from high school in September and immediately enrolled in a six-week programme at the Royal Naval College Dartmouth. The guided-missile destroyer HMS Norfolk (1971–1972), the frigates HMS Minerva (1972–1973), and HMS Jupiter (1973–1985) were his next assignments (1974).
He joined the 845 Naval Air Squadron out of HMS Hermes after earning his helicopter pilot’s licence at RNAS Yeovilton in 1974. After he and his crew were judged liable for a 1994 crash landing on Islay involving a BAe 146, he decided to retire from the airline industry.

Charity and Philanthropy
Charles has formed 16 new nonprofits since establishing the Prince’s Trust in 1976, and he currently serves as president of each of them.
Collectively, these organisations form the Prince’s Charities, which calls itself “the largest multi-cause charitable enterprise in the United Kingdom, raising over £100 million annually… [and is] active across a broad range of areas including education and young people, environmental sustainability, the built environment, responsible business and enterprise, and international.”
To mirror its British namesake, the Prince’s Charities Canada was founded in 2010. Even more than 400 additional organisations call Charles their patron.
He uses his travels around Canada to advocate for several causes, including children, the disabled, the arts, medical, the elderly, preservation of cultural traditions, and education. Charles has helped finance Canadian charitable endeavours. He and his two sons attended events commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination that year (1998).
Similarly, Charles established the Prince’s Charities Australia with headquarters in Melbourne, Victoria. With the establishment of The Prince’s Charities Australia, Charles’s philanthropic work on both a national and international scale will have a centralised point of contact.
