Early Life

Jack Johnson grew up on Hawaii’s North Shore, the stomping ground of his famous surfer father, Jeffery Johnson. At age 5, he first tried surfing and quickly became hooked. At the age of 17, he made history by becoming the youngest surfer ever invited to compete in the finals of the Pipeline Masters on Oahu’s North Shore.

However, a surfing accident at the Pipeline that required more than 100 stitches in his forehead and the removal of a few teeth ended his career as a professional surfer one week later, inspiring him to write the song “Drink the Water.” In the 1994 film The Endless Summer II, he made an appearance as a surfer.

Jack Johnson completed high school at Kahuku on the island of Oahu. Later he would enroll at UC Santa Barbara, where he would earn a degree in film studies in 1997.

Although Johnson picked up the guitar at age 8 and began writing songs at age 12, it wasn’t until he played rhythm guitar for the band Soil (not to be confused with the heavy metal band of the same name) in college that his love of music truly blossomed.

Career

To get his foot in the door, Jack Johnson contributed to the G. Love song “Rodeo Clowns,” which appeared on the album “Philadelphonic” by G. Love and Special Sauce in 1999. A common buddy has introduced Johnson and G. Love. Johnson’s career was jumpstarted by this song.

In 2001, he released his first album, titled “Brushfire Fairytales.” He released his second studio album in 2003 titled “On and On.” His third studio album, titled “In Between Dreams,” was released that same year. Johnson composed the film’s score and released it as a soundtrack album in 2006 titled “Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George.”

In 2008, Johnson released his fourth studio album, titled “Sleep Through the Static.” In 2010, he released his fifth studio album, titled “To The Sea.” Johnson performed at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee in 2013, and his sixth studio album, titled “From Here to Now to You,” was published that same year. All the Light Above it Too, Johnson’s seventh studio album, was released in 2018.

The following fall, he made an appearance at Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Fest at Doheny State Beach in Southern California.

Personal Life

The Kokua Hawaii Foundation was founded in 2003 by Jack and Kim Johnson to promote environmental education throughout Hawaii’s educational institutions and communities. From 2004 to 2008 and again in 2010, the foundation held a festival each year to generate money for charitable causes.

He released a live Kkua Festival album titled “Best of Kkua Festival” in April 2012, just before his 2012 Hawaiian Islands tour.
