When Photographing an Album Cover, Selena Gomez Claims She Felt “Ashamed”

Selena Gomez claimed that one of her album covers was “overly sexual,” which made her angry.

The “Only Murders in the Building” star took part in a roundtable discussion with other comedic stars from popular shows like Quinta Brunson from “Abbott Elementary” and Amy Schumer from “Life & Beth” for The Hollywood Reporter.

During the debate, Schumer brought up how Gomez had to consciously reject her childhood sexualization as a Disney kid star. Gomez responded, “That’s absolutely unjust. “I once designed an album cover, and I was quite embarrassed by it. I had to deal with those emotions because I recognized they were linked to something more significant that was happening.”

Gomez Added :

“I didn’t always enjoy my decision, but I believe I did my best — or at least tried — to be myself. I don’t have a lot of sexual energy. It’s not always for someone else, but sometimes I like to feel seductive. It might apply to me.”

Selena Gomez did not explain which album she was alluding to, but the “Hands to Myself” singer had previously posed in a bikini on the cover of her 2015 album “Revival.” Gomez admitted to Allure in 2020 that she felt “pressure” from the outside to be more sexual in the music videos for tracks that were taken from the album.

I simply did things that weren’t who I am, she admitted. “On my album, “Revival,” there was pressure to come off as more mature. I felt compelled to reveal skin… I firmly believe that I was not [that] person.”

Gomez also provided an explanation for her absence from social media. She explained that the main reason she couldn’t look that way was that she could see all of these other people. “It cannot be done. Since I don’t think it’s reachable, everything else seems real the instant I leave it.”

Gomez has already been open about her experience as a child star growing up and her problematic use of social media. When working on “Wizards of Waverly Place” and other Disney projects during her adolescent years, Gomez claimed during a Television Critics Association (TCA) panel last year that she had “signed my life away to Disney.”

She also admitted to Vogue that having the paparazzi follow her during those years was “violating.” Going off of social media earlier this year was “the finest decision I’ve ever made for my mental health,” Gomez stated in an interview with Instyle.

Instagram once took over her entire world, and she admitted that this was really risky. “I thought I wasn’t attractive enough when I was in my early 20s. For a long time in my life, I believed in the necessity of cosmetics and never wanted to be seen without them.”
