Tommy Dorfman admits she is a transwoman
Having recently graduated from Fordham University’s drama program, Tommy Dorfman was a promising newcomer to the acting world in 2016. The young twenty-something hit the jackpot when she was cast in the lead role of Netflix’s original adolescent drama 13 Reasons Why not long after she graduated from college. According to an interview Dorfman gave to InStyle’s Laura Brown, “[Being a woman] is all I’ve known on the inside, even though I’ve had the opportunity of walking in a male body. Since it’s a very universal phenomenon, trans women were always clocking me and asking, “Hey, girl, what’s up?” Upon hearing Dorfman’s assertion, Brown remarked, “Huh. Like a pheromone, huh? Perhaps,” replied Dorfman. I’ve done it to other individuals, and it’s something you can kind of detect in other ladies. In the end, transgender folks just seem magical. Finally, after consulting with more seasoned trans women, Dorfman gained the knowledge and courage to accept and love her true self.

Dorfman elaborated her truth on Instagram
Dorfman said that she has been living her truth on Instagram for a time now, recording her ever-changing sense of style and appearance, but that she finally felt ready to confront medically transitioning as a way to reclaim her story. “I’ve been living in this other kind of coming out where I don’t feel safe enough to talk about it, so I just do it,” she said.
Then again, I do appreciate the attractiveness of change. I don’t see a reason not to show that to the world. Instead, I decided to keep an Instagram diary, which depicts a body existing in a less rigid environment. On the contrary, my experience in the public eye has taught me that if I don’t explain myself, I risk losing the ability to direct my own story.
