Rebel Melanie Elizabeth Bownds (born 2 March 1980) is an Australian actor, comedian, writer, singer/songwriter, and producer. Wilson began acting as Toula in the SBS sitcom Pizza (2003–2007, 2019) after graduating from the Australian Theatre for Young People in 2003. She also participated in the sketch comedy series The Wedge (2006–2007). Her musical comedy series Bogan Pride was written, produced and starred in (2008). Wilson featured in the 2011 comedies Bridesmaids and A Few Best Men shortly after coming to the United States.
She was nominated by Variety as one of their “Top Ten Comics to Watch for 2013” for her roles in What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Struck by Lightning, and Bachelorette. There were numerous awards given to her for her portrayal of Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect films (2012–2017), including an MTV Movie Award nomination and a Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Actress. She appears in the films How to Be Single (2016) and Grimsby (2016) in the year of their respective releases.
Super Fun Night (2013), an ABC sitcom he created and starred in, ran for one season. Her first starring part was as Natalie in Isn’t It Romantic, and she also appeared in The Hustle and Cats as Penny Rust and Jennyanydots respectively in 2019. Wilson was nominated for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for her role as Fraulein Rahm in the drama film Jojo Rabbit (2019).
Career
While at Australian Theatre for Young People, Wilson was a student (ATYP).
After obtaining the Nicole Kidman-funded ATYP International fellowship, she went to New York City in 2003. The Second City was Wilson’s training ground while he was in New York. With the Sydney Theatre Company and at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, she had a successful career. First came to public recognition in 2002 when she featured in and produced the theatrical musical “The Westie Monologues,” which she wrote and starred in. In addition to Spunks and Confessions of an Exchange Student, she created, produced and starred in her subsequent theatre plays.
Toula on Pizza, an SBS comedy series, and numerous characters including Lucy, Fat Mandi, and Karla Bangs on The Wedge are among Wilson’s most well-known roles in Australia. In a series of Telstra commercials that aired during the fourth and fifth seasons of Australian Idol, she played a schoolgirl obsessed with the show. She has made appearances on the improvisational comedy show Thank God You’re Here and the comedic game show Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation.
