Early Life
In Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York City, on January 10, 1953, Patricia Mae Andrzejewski was born. Her father Andrew worked in sheet metal, while her mother Mildred was a hairdresser.
The family relocated to the village of Lindenhurst in the Long Island municipality of Babylon, New York. Benatar displayed an interest in theater and started voice lessons very young, performing her first solo at Daniel Street Elementary School at the age of eight, a song called “It Must Be Spring.”
Years later, she showcased the strength of her 4.5-octave vocal in school plays at the musical theater program at Lindenhurst Senior High. She had intended to attend Julliard, but changed her mind and enrolled at Stony Brook University to study health education.
But after only a year at Stony Brook, Pat shocked everyone by getting married to her high school sweetheart, a soldier named Dennis T. Benatar, and moving in with him to Virginia, where he was stationed. In 1973, she began working as a bank teller in Richmond, Virginia.
Career
Pat soon grew weary of her mundane existence as a housewife and bank clerk resigned from her job, and applied for a singing waitress position at a nightclub named The Roaring Twenties instead of a singing waitress position at a Holiday Inn.
She met pianist Phil Coxon there, where they started a duo that soon became Coxon’s Army, a ten-piece lounge band. As the band gained notoriety, the pair moved to New York City in May 1975 so that Benatar could focus on her solo singing career once Dennis was released from the Army.
Rick Newman saw her when she covered Judy Garland’s “Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody,” and he later hired her as his manager. For the following three years, she frequently performed at the club Catch a Rising Star.
She recorded commercial jingles for Pepsi-Cola and several regional brands in between performances on stage. Pat joined Chrysalis Records in 1978. Soon later, Pat and Dennis got divorced, but she kept his last name.
“In the Heat of the Night,” Pat Benatar’s debut album, was released in August 1979 and reached its peak position in the U.S. charts in March 1980 at No. 12. In December 1980, the album received a Platinum certification.
In August 1980, Benatar released “Crimes of Passion,” her second studio album. Her first hit to reach the US Top 10 and sell over a million copies was “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.
” In February 1981, Benatar received her first Grammy for “Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.” In August 1981, her third album, “Precious Time,” debuted at No. 1 on the US Top LP list, earning her a second Grammy.
“Love is a Battlefield,” one of her best singles, came out in 1983.
