Early Life
Jacksonville, Arkansas-born Kristopher Neil Allen was born June 21st, 1985.
It’s Allen’s job to look after his younger brother and sister. When he was very young, he had a strong interest in music. When he was in elementary school, he began playing the viola and continued to do so in the orchestra at Mills University Studies High School.
He first picked up a guitar at the age of 13 and has been playing ever since. As revealed in his American Idol audition tapes, his musical heroes include the Beatles, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Jamie Cullum, Jason Mraz, Pat Monahan, and Jason Alexander.
Career
American Idol runner-up Allen is most known for his victory on the eighth season of the show. When he was in high school, he made the Arkansas All-State Symphony after winning a competition for a position in the orchestra at an early age.
The first time he picked up a guitar was when he was just 13. In the months leading up to his audition for American Idol, he had opened for Sean Michel, another hopeful.
Idol auditions were the last thing Allen wanted to do before giving up his music career. He didn’t finish college because he wanted to be a professional musician instead.
He self-released his debut album, “Brand New Shoes,” in 2007. Two years later, he auditioned for ‘American Idol,’ where he beat off eventual runner-up Adam Lambert to win the competition.
Kris Allen’s debut album, ‘Kris Allen,’ was published in 2009 and debuted at #11 on the Billboard 200 chart the same year he won ‘Idol.’ “No Boundaries” and “Heartless” both charted in the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list during this time period. ‘Thank You Camellia’, his follow-up album, was released in 2012 to critical acclaim.
