Pirro was appointed Assistant District Attorney of Westchester County by District Attorney Carl Vergari in 1975, and she asked Vergari to apply for a grant that would allow county D.A. offices to establish domestic violence bureaus in 1977. Vergari complied with Jeanine’s request, and his office was awarded one of the grants, prompting him to choose Pirro as chief of the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Bureau in 1978. After beating Democratic opponent Lawrence D. Lenihan and Right to Life Party candidate August C. Nimphius, Jr. in November 1990, Jeanine resigned as an Assistant District Attorney and was elected to the Westchester County Court as a judge.
Pirro was elected as the first female Westchester County District Attorney in November 1993, after serving as the county’s first female judge for two years. She was re-elected in 1997 and 2001. Following the murder-suicide of Anne Scripps Douglas and Scott Douglas in December 1993/January 1994, she became more well-known.
