Diana’s younger brother, Irnis, was tragically killed by Serb soldiers when he was only 21 years old. Diana was studying economics at the University of Sarajevo at the time of his assassination. During the Siege of Sarajevo in April 1992, she was forced to evacuate Bosnia. Yugoslavia’s disintegration triggered the war. Until December 1995, there was a bloodbath.

Many of her fellow Yugoslavian immigrants were granted permanent citizenship around this time, but Diana was given permanent citizenship due to her excellent academic record and the fact that she had never requested for government assistance.
