818 Tequila Kendall Jenner Controversy: She Is Accused of Cultural Appropriation in New 818 Tequila

American model, media personality, and socialite Kendall Nicole Jenner was born on November 3, 1995. A daughter of Kris and Caitlyn Jenner, she rose to popularity on the reality television show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Jenner began her career as a model at the age of 14

It wasn’t until her breakout seasons in New York (2014-15) and Milan (2015-16) that the model was able to show her true potential as an aspiring fashion model. Jenner is a spokesperson for Estée Lauder and has appeared in advertisements, editorials, and on the covers of numerous international editions of Vogue. She is also a LOVE and Vogue ambassador.

A rise to stardom

The reality television show Keeping Up with the Kardashians was launched in 2007 by Kim Kardashian and her family, including Kylie Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, and Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, and Rob Kardashian.

After announcing the launch of her tequila firm, “818,” Kendall Jenner has had three months to get the word out. There were many who were applauding how she managed to start a company from scratch while others were questioning whether she had appropriated Mexican culture. The latter has done so once more, as we can see here.

In honour of the imminent launch of her tequila brand in the United States, Jenner posted an advertisement she filmed in Mexico from an agave farm in Jalisco, which has sparked outrage on the internet.

“What a fantastic time I have had so far, learning about this lovely place [Jalisco, Mexico], its beautiful culture, and the gorgeous people!” Jenner wrote on Instagram in response to the controversy around the campaign.

Jenner may be seen in images riding a horse through the rows of agave plants, drinking tequila from the back of a pickup truck, and in other photos of agave growers.

When it came down to it, Jenner’s outfit was the most controversial aspect of her appearance. Many on the internet remarked on Jenner’s choice to dress and style her hair in a manner traditionally associated with Mexican culture, despite the fact that she is not Mexican.

There were accusations of cultural appropriation or an effort at “migrant chic” when one woman appeared in public wearing jeans, an American flag cowboy hat and a loose cotton blouse over her tank top. Many people assumed that the campaign and the tequila brand were playing on prejudices about Mexican farmers because Jenner is an American.

It’s not uncommon for Mexican stereotypes to be depicted in American media in a sepia tone, as several have pointed out. She’s not the only one, of course;

It’s not clear how much the agave plant farmers were paid for their participation in the campaign and for harvesting the agave she utilises for her tequila.

Mexico and its culture are deeply rooted in tequila, and the town of Jalisco, in particular, is revered as the origin of the spirit. So it’s understandable that many people take offence when celebrities of non-Mexican heritage start tequila enterprises, because of the potential exploitation and promotion of their brands over locally owned distilleries by their millions of fans.

What does 818’s tequila state?

It states that they “work closely with local, family-owned farms in Jalisco, Mexico,” however their focus on sustainability seems to be more important than addressing the ethics of their harvesting. Jenner has chosen to switch off comments on Instagram rather than reply to critiques of 818 tequila.

Even in the face of inexorable change, certain things remain constant…. 2021 compared to 2017 If the Pepsi commercial reaction hadn’t happened, Kendall wouldn’t have bothered about this nasty brown face, culture appropriation on an entirely new level. pic.twitter.com/nTkxiVZroy

The Kardashian-Jenners are well-versed in cultural appropriation accusations and tone-deaf incidents

Jenner’s Pepsi commercial—in which she stopped police brutality by handing an officer a can of Pepsi—to Kim Kardashian’s Fulani braids and Jenner’s 2018 photoshoot in which she sported an Afro hairdo, the family continues to be the target of charges, most of which are without an apology.

So let’s hope that future efforts from 818 are sympathetic to the concerns about the gentrification of migrant labour.
