Three new animated Avatar films are in development at Nickelodeon’s Avatar Studios, according to Paramount and Nickelodeon. The first film will be directed by Lauren Montgomery (Avatar: The Last Airbender).
Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, who created Nickelodeon’s franchise-launching series Avatar: The Last Airbender, will produce alongside Eric Coleman, the show’s EP. Latifa Ouaou, EVP of Movies and Global Franchises at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, will oversee the development of the first feature alongside Jason McConnell, Vice President of Animation at Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation.
Montgomery is an experienced director, producer, and storyboard artist who worked on the original Avatar series in the latter position. Voltron: Legendary Defender, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated and Young Justice is some of his other directing credits.
Mike and Bryan, as Original Creators, Join Us in Expanding the Avatar Universe.
“With original creators Mike and Bryan expanding the Avatar universe with us, we’re keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the upcoming theatrical,” said Ramsey Naito, President of Animation & Development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation.
Avatar: The Last Airbender aired for three seasons between 2005 and 2008 and followed Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), a young child who reawakens in a war-torn world of elemental magic to embark on a risky mystic quest in order to realize his destiny as the Avatar and bring peace to the world.
