The New York City LGBTQ community is in shock and outrage after the fatally stabbed of O’Shae Sibley, a 28-year-old professional dancer, during a confrontation at a Brooklyn gas station

As investigations continue, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. According to Otis Pena, a friend who witnessed the fatally stabbed incident and emotionally recounted it in a Facebook video, Sibley lost his life because he stood up for his friends.

Sibley was a celebrated dancer known for using his craft to celebrate his LGBTQ identity, and his untimely death has left the dance community and those close to him devastated. Tributes have poured in, including one from Beyoncé herself, who posted a tribute on her website, flashing the message “Rest in power O’Shae Sibley.”

Security camera footage obtained by various news organizations provides some insight into the fatally stabbed incident. The video shows some members of Sibley’s group engaging in a dance-like strut, which seemed to trigger a confrontation with a young man at the gas station. After an intense argument, both groups initially walked away, but tension escalated when Sibley and a friend approached the young man with the phone who seemed to have said something provocative. The situation turned violent, and Sibley was fatally stabbed, with the assailant and the moment of the fatally stabbed remaining unclear from the footage.

Witnesses have alleged that the young men engaged in harassing behavior towards Sibley’s group, targeting their religious beliefs and expressing disapproval of their dance moves

This fatally stabbed incident has resulted in a widespread show of support and calls for justice, with plans for a memorial titled “Justice for O’Shae Sibley” at the gas station and a vigil at Manhattan‘s LGBTQ Community Center.

Sibley’s untimely passing has brought to the forefront the issue of violence against the LGBTQ community, leaving a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and the artistic community, who lost a talented dancer and advocate.
