Disney has been cranking out live-action remakes of its popular animated flicks for years, for better or for worse. They’ve now progressed to the point where they’ve created their own parody, designed to subtly ridicule while promoting a slew of Disney properties. With a Hollywood backdrop that offers an endless parade of cameos of real-life and cartoon celebs, the new Disney release Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers plays like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, bringing back the classic animated characters in a live-action neo-noir scenario, with a voice cast that includes Andy Samberg, John Mulaney, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, and Eric Bana.
However, it’s somewhat unsurprising that this showbiz comedy pulls its punches when it’s Disney poking fun at itself.
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers begins with a fantastic notion, written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. The mischievous rodents are reimagined as a comedic partnership who came up with the characters seen on the 1980s television show Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers: Chip (John Mulaney) was Dale’s (Andy Samberg) straight man. Dale attempted to go solo after growing tired of feeling like a joke, inadvertently destroying both his and Chip’s acting careers. Years later, Dale has desperately sought to recapture his popularity by undergoing “3D animation surgery,” which makes him appear like the victim of many a bad CGI reboot, while Chip has abandoned Hollywood for a lonely life as a pencil pusher/dog parent. That is, until Monterey Jack (Eric Bana), their old pal, disappears. When LAPD detective Putty (J.K. Simmons) runs out of leads, the feuding former friends band together to save their co-star from a fate that isn’t nearly as bad as death. But that is something we will discuss later.

Dale is well-played by Samberg, but Chip is miscast by Mulaney.
Andy Samberg plays Dale, a delightful doofus, and he’s in his element. Chip’s skepticism and rationality are balanced out by his trademark optimism and wackiness. Mulaney, on the other hand, appears to be wasted in the position of the straight guy. He feels restricted by the taciturn temperament of this dream-dashed chipmunk, a stand-up comic who’s long experimented with his voice as if he’d stepped out of a 1940s movie. Mulaney’s voice brought Spider-Ham to life in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but he comes across as flat in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
However, filmmaker Akiva Schaffer (of The Lonely Island) makes liberal use of humor and spectacle. Kooky movie posters and jokes litter the background. Fans of animation will be enthralled by the vast array of cartoon characters that appear in “person,” like products, cosplay, or namedrops. Chip and Dale’s Los Angeles is home to more than simply famous Disney characters, such as Lumiere. Marvel Comics, Star Wars, The Simpsons, South Park, Rick and Morty, Shaun the Sheep, Beavis and Butthead, My Little Pony, and a slew of others are all referenced.
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers vs. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit back in 1988, succeeds in creating a world where toons and humans coexist by incorporating a slew of characters from across studio licensing. It’s the kind of crossover that currently seems inconceivable, and Disney deserves credit for fitting so many cameos in. They’re not just fun to find, but they’re also a good reminder of how excitingly different animation has become throughout the years — not only inside the House of Mouse style but also outside of it. Disney, on the other hand, can’t equal the audacity of Buena Vista Pictures’ Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers does not dare to get so dark, despite its blend of animation and live-action.

Rescue Rangers is a neo-noir sans the noir.
Smelly cheese stands in for drugs in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and there’s an abduction plan involving has-been toons. There is no danger of death. Rather than being erased, the huge terrifying menace to Monterey Jack and the other kidnapped toons is redrawn in janky new incarnations. Because the genuine villains in a Disney film are the mockbuster studios attempting to profit from their intellectual property.
What actors will appear in Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers?
John Mulaney as Chip, Andy Samberg as Dale, KiKi Layne, Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, and Dennis Haysbert are among the cast members of the hybrid live-action/CG animated comedy.
Additionally, the cast includes Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, and Chris Parnell.
What’s the story behind Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers?
Chip and Dale are living among cartoons and people in modern-day Los Angeles in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, but their lives are considerably different now, according to an official Walt Disney Studio synopsis. Chip (voice of Mulaney) has resigned himself to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman after their successful television series was canceled decades ago.
“In the meantime, Dale (Sandberg’s voice) has undergone CGI surgery and travels the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. Chip and Dale must mend their damaged friendship and resurrect their Rescue Rangers investigative egos to save their friend’s life after a previous castmate unexpectedly vanishes.”
