Controversy
On Sunday night, Manny Machado didn’t try to disguise his anger toward umpire Angel Hernandez.
Mets reliever Drew Smith hit Manny Machado with an 85 mph changeup in the sixth inning of the team’s 8-5 victory over the San Diego Padres.
As the third baseman lowered his head to monitor his swing, the fastball caught him in the elbow. Machado groused in discomfort and started walking to first, but first base umpire Hernandez stopped him, arguing that Machado had struck out since he had gone around on the swing.

The 30-year-old Machado’s shocked countenance betrayed his amazement at the call. The first surprise quickly evolved into a rage.
When Machado got back to the dugout, he lost it and started pounding stuff on the bench. Despite Hernandez’s propensity for faulty judgments, the umpire’s right call was quickly defended by Twitter users.
However, Machado, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored, and a series win, has reason to be satisfied with his performance in New York.
Outrage Over Manny Machado’s Three-Word T-Shirt Message
Manny Machado, third baseman for the San Diego Padres, has a history of attracting attention for all the wrong reasons. There’s a good reason why Fernando Tatis Jr. has such a deep and abiding hatred for him.
This is why many other MLB stars haven’t been afraid to publicly or privately criticize Machado.
Machado almost seems to enjoy the criticism he receives. Machado had an unusual jersey this week when he came up at Padres Spring Training. There was a simple three-word statement on it, and it got everyone’s attention.
A common way to disrespect Vice President Joe Biden is with the statement “Let’s go, Brandon.”
Immediate responses flooded in in response to Machado’s move:
Shut up and hit the baseball! Remember no politics in sports, THEY say! https://t.co/zH7qAqcxjU

Despite widespread discontent, the intersection between politics and athletics shows no signs of abating any time soon.
Everything seems to be happening at once these days, from Danica Patrick’s thoughts on Lia Thomas’ NCAA Championship run to LeBron James’s involvement in a $27 million drive to allow convicts to vote.
Machado’s recent deeds are further evidence of that.
Do you think we’ll ever be able to separate our national hobbies from the political division that has gripped America? We’ll have to wait and see.

Machado joined the Gulf Coast League Orioles on August 22 after reporting to the Orioles minor league complex. On August 27, 2010, Machado made his professional baseball debut with the Gulf Coast League Orioles, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
He was the team’s designated hitter. In just his second game with the Orioles, Machado hit his first career home run.
On August 30, 2010, Machado made his major league debut with the Aberdeen IronBirds of the New York-Penn League, where he went 1-for-3 with a single. After the fifth inning, he was taken out of the game after playing shortstop instead of the designated hitter like he had with the Orioles.
