Musical influences and styles

Maren Morris fuses country music with country pop, R&B, and Hip-Hop in her musical approach. Many music writers and reviewers noted that Morris’s first two Columbia albums incorporated elements of country music with R&B and Hip-Hop. AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated that 2016’s Hero has “R&B influences” that “twist the rhymes” and “[ride] the beat” while “undercutting her claims with subtle wit.”

Jewly Hight of Billboard described Hero as “a marker of country-fluidity pop’s and a creative process similar to the track-building of pop, R&B, and hip-hop.” While many male country artists experiment with hip-hop in a stilted manner, Morris incorporates straight-up elements of 1990s R&B onto the album on tracks like “RSVP,” the Hartford Courant said.

Morris considers herself mostly a country singer-songwriter. According to an interview with NPR, Morris said she still considers herself a country artist “despite the fact that my hometown is Nashville and I am from Texas and I believe that my songwriting at its core is country.” According to Stephen Erlewine, Morris’ music was rooted in country, but she combined elements of pop, R&B, hip-hop, and rock into her own elegant hybrid that had considerable appeal beyond her chosen genre.

Morris has credited a slew of musicians from a variety of genres for influencing her work. The Chicks, Linda Ronstadt, Sheryl Crow, Dolly Parton, Patty Griffin, Chaka Khan, and Hank Williams are just a few of the many musicians who have contributed to this list.
