During a race in Katowice, fellow Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen went off his line at 80 km/h, driving Deceuninck-QuickStep rider Kristian Jakobsen into the flimsy barriers that gave way upon impact. Groenewegen was banned from racing for nine months by the UCI Disciplinary Commission, and he only returned to competition in the Giro d’Italia in 2013.

In the crash, Jakobsen was gravely injured, lost most of his teeth, and was placed in a medically induced coma.

According to the Guardian, he was placed in a medically-induced coma for two days following the crash on the opening stage of the 2020 Tour de Pologne.

Afterward, he got face injuries and a severe concussion, while Groenewegen cracked his collarbone. After the crash, he underwent many operations and was subsequently put into a coma. The cyclist routinely publishes images of himself in and out of accidents on his social media site.

Jakobsen won two stages in the 2019 Vuelta an Espana, including stage 21 in Madrid, which was the race’s last stage.

In 2021 Vuelta an Espaa, Jakobsen improved on his 2019 result by winning three stages:

Stages 4, 8, and 16. While competing for the green points classification jersey with Jasper Philipsen, he was able to maintain a comfortable lead. To complicate matters further, Philipsen was forced to withdraw from the race after Stage 10 due to illness, leaving Magnus Cort and overall GC contender Primo Rogli as his main competition in the race’s final stages.

Stage 16, won by Jakobsen on his 25th birthday in a sprint finish, was the deciding stage. In spite of the fact that he was unable to add to his point total after this stage win, he was still the overall leader in the points competition until the end of the race, earning him his first Grand Tour jersey.

In 2022, Jakobsen took the lead in the second stage of the Tour de France with a win.
