Early Years
Baltimore, Maryland native John Waters was born on April 22, 1946, to John Samuel Waters Jr. Father John (a fire-protection equipment manufacturer) and mother Patricia Ann (a schoolteacher) raised him along with his siblings Steve, Kathy, and Trish. As a 7-year-old, John saw the 1953 picture Lili and got fascinated with puppets.
He began producing violent puppet performances for children’s birthday parties after watching Lili. Glenn Milstead (aka Divine) was Waters’ muse while he was a student at Calvert Hall College High School and Boys’ Latin School of Maryland in the Baltimore suburb of Lutherville. It wasn’t until the 1966 semester of his freshman year of college that John got booted out of New York University because of his drug use.
Career
“Hag in a Black Leather Jacket,” Waters’ first short film, was released in 1964. All four of his feature films were made by the same person: He wrote, directed, and produced the short film “Roman Candles” (1966), directed and produced the short film “Eat Your Makeup” (1968), and directed and produced the feature picture “The Diane Linkletter Story” (1970). With “Mondo Trasho” in 1969, and “Multiple Maniacs” in 1970, John made his feature-length directorial debut. “Pink Flamingos,” the first film in his so-called “Trash Trilogy,” came out in 1972, followed by “Female Trouble” in 1974 and “Desperate Living” in 1977. With “Polyester,” Waters hired film student David Insley as the primary camera operator for the first time in 1981. ‘Hairspray’ was released by John in 1988 and transformed into a Broadway musical that won eight Tony Awards.
Several years later, a cinematic adaptation of the musical was released, and Waters was a co-producer and consultant on the project. He also starred in both films, as Dr. Fredrickson in the original film and as a Flasher in the 2007 remake.
