Tropical Storm Pilar unleashed its fury on Central America on Tuesday, drenching the region with torrential downpours that have tragically claimed two lives in El Salvador

Early on Tuesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that Tropical Storm Pilar was positioned approximately 160 miles south of San Salvador, carrying sustained winds of 50 mph and creeping east-northeast at 3 mph.

Tropical Storm Pilar is anticipated to adhere to this general trajectory throughout Tuesday, hovering just off the coast for a day or more before executing a sudden reversal, steering back out to sea on Thursday, mercifully avoiding a direct landfall. Predictions suggest that Tropical Storm Pilar will deluge the region from El Salvador to Costa Rica with rainfall ranging from five to ten inches, and in some areas, reaching a staggering 15 inches.

El Salvador experienced sporadic rainfall on Tuesday, no evacuation orders have been issued

Unfortunately, two lives were lost on Sunday as a 24-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were swept away by raging streams in the La Union province, according to Fermín Pérez, the assistant director of El Salvador’s civil defense office. Tragically, their lifeless bodies were recovered on Monday.

In response to the looming threat of Tropical Storm Pilar, El Salvador’s government raised its alert status on Sunday, and the country’s Congress declared a national emergency, thereby empowering civil defense authorities to enforce evacuations for individuals in harm’s way. Educational institutions have been temporarily shuttered across the nation until Wednesday, and approximately 100 shelters have been readied for those in need.

Further up the Pacific coast, Mexican authorities persist in their recovery endeavors following the devastating impact of Category 5 Hurricane Otis, which struck Acapulco last week, resulting in a minimum of 46 fatalities and leaving numerous individuals unaccounted for.
