An intense atmospheric river storm unleashed its fury upon the Pacific Northwest, causing widespread flooding and havoc across the region

Steve King, a hydrologist at the Northwest River Forecast Center in Portland, described the situation as a typical but severe flood event, emphasizing the enormity of the impact. Tragically, two individuals were found deceased in creeks within the Portland area amidst the flooding.

The unrelenting downpours, persisting since the previous Friday, have inundated the region. Brent Bower from the National Weather Service‘s Seattle office highlighted the continuous assault of rainfall, emphasizing the relentless nature of the atmospheric river storm.

Amid daring rescue missions, including one involving Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue retrieving a stranded individual from the flooded Skykomish River, the destructive force of these atmospheric river storms was evident. Such storms, commonly resembling concentrated fire hoses on weather radar, are a familiar occurrence along the West Coast.

Last winter, California bore witness to a series of these atmospheric river storms, causing significant financial losses

Forecasters from the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes rated this recent storm as a level 4 in intensity and duration on their scale, closely monitoring its impact. The fallout of this atmospheric river storm saw temperature records broken in Seattle and Portland, while areas in Washington experienced the highest potential precipitation in decades. While King County in Seattle managed moderate flooding impacts, neighboring Snohomish County bore the brunt of the storm’s wrath, grappling with record-breaking flooding levels. Drone footage depicted inundated rural homes, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Though more rain was forecasted into the weekend, experts anticipated its impact to be relatively minor in comparison to the recent catastrophic event. Residents in affected areas remained vigilant, preparing sandbags as precautionary measures against the potential continuation of flooding.
