San Angelo, TX – A winter weather advisory is in effect across west central Texas starting at 3 a.m. Thursday. A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will dip below freezing early Thursday, allowing precipitation to transition to sleet and snow. Light accumulations of ice and snow, up to one inch in some areas, could develop on roadways, particularly bridges and overpasses. Although temperatures may rise above freezing Thursday afternoon, allowing for a temporary thaw, freezing conditions will likely return Thursday night.
The advisory impacts several counties, including Tom Green, Taylor, Brown, and San Saba. Residents are urged to exercise caution during their morning and evening commutes, as slippery road conditions are anticipated. Road moisture that remains into the night could refreeze, compounding hazards for Friday morning.
Drivers are advised to reduce speed and maintain safe following distances on icy roads. The Texas Department of Transportation recommends checking road conditions before traveling by visiting DriveTexas.org or dialing 511.
The winter weather advisory is set to expire at 6 a.m. Friday, though conditions may persist longer in isolated areas. Residents should monitor local forecasts for updates and prepare for potential disruptions.
