Chautauqua, NY – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Chautauqua County and parts of northern New York until 7 a.m. Thursday. Lake effect snow is expected to bring up to 5 inches of additional snowfall overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Chautauqua County could see 2 inches of snow in the heaviest lake effect bands. Meanwhile, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, and Oswego counties are projected to receive between 2 to 5 inches of accumulation. Gusty winds up to 35 mph may also cause blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility in some areas.

Travel Impacts Across Counties

Drivers across the affected regions should prepare for slippery roads and sudden whiteout conditions. These hazards are expected to impact the Thursday morning commute, with unpredictable weather shifts making road conditions highly variable. Lake effect snow often produces sharp contrasts, with heavy snow occurring just a few miles away from dry conditions.

The NWS advises motorists to allow extra travel time, avoid unnecessary trips, and remain alert to changing road conditions. Blowing snow is likely to create additional challenges, particularly in open areas.

Staying Prepared

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and report snow totals or road conditions via the NWS website or social media platforms. Snowfall is expected to taper off by early Thursday morning, but lingering slick roads may continue to impact travel during rush hour.

Whether in Chautauqua County or the northern counties of Wayne, Cayuga, and Oswego, preparation and caution are key to navigating the winter weather safely.
