Morristown, TN – A significant winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and icy conditions to East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia starting Friday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning on Thursday morning, advising residents to prepare for up to 6 inches of snow in some areas. The storm will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and continue until 7 a.m. Saturday. Higher elevations may see even greater totals, potentially exceeding a foot.
According to the NWS, the warning includes multiple counties in East Tennessee, such as Knox, Jefferson, and Sevier, as well as areas of Southwest Virginia. Mixed precipitation is also possible in some locations, with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation expected.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous during the storm. Commuters are warned to expect delays, particularly on Friday morning and evening. Travelers are urged to carry emergency supplies such as flashlights, water, and food in their vehicles.
Temperatures will remain below freezing through the weekend, making road conditions dangerous even after the snow stops. Officials recommend delaying travel unless absolutely necessary.
