Springfield, IL – Central and southeast Illinois residents can expect 2-4 inches of snow beginning late Thursday night and continuing into Friday morning. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region, warning of slick roadways and reduced visibility during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will develop across the area starting late Thursday night, intensifying into Friday morning. Snowfall amounts range from 1-3 inches west of the Illinois River, while areas southeast of I-70 could see more than 4 inches. Snow will taper off from west to east by Friday afternoon.
Travelers are advised to leave extra time Friday morning due to hazardous road conditions. Visibility may drop significantly during periods of heavier snowfall, creating additional risks for drivers. Experts recommend reducing speed, using headlights, and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
Southeast of the Illinois River, heavier snow is forecast, with a 30-40% chance of totals exceeding 4 inches. Areas closer to I-70 face the highest accumulation risks.
Officials urge residents to check road conditions before traveling. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready by clearing windows and keeping an emergency kit. Those commuting early Friday morning should allow extra time to ensure a safe journey.
As the storm subsides Friday afternoon, temperatures may hover near freezing, which could contribute to icy conditions. Stay informed by monitoring updates from local weather services.
