Montgomery, AL – A severe winter storm has left roads across Alabama impassable, prompting widespread closures in over 25 counties. Snow and ice accumulation has made travel hazardous, with authorities urging residents to avoid unnecessary driving.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is actively treating Interstate 20, spanning from the Georgia state line to the Logan Martin Bridge. However, many major highways and local roads remain treacherous. In Calhoun County, all city roadways are closed, with ice and snow rendering Jacksonville City roads impassable. Alabama 77 and Alabama 144 near the Etowah County line are iced over.
St. Clair County is experiencing rain, complicating icy conditions. Multiple vehicles and tractor trailers have become stuck along Interstate 20 westbound near mile marker 153. ALEA Troopers are working to clear the scene, though no crashes have been reported.
In Talladega County, U.S. 280 near Merkel Mountain is nearly impassable, while Childersburg City has shut down all roads. In Chambers County, bridges on Alabama 77 and other routes are accumulating snow and ice, worsening travel risks.
Further north, counties like Madison, Limestone, and Morgan report snow-covered roads, with Etowah County seeing multiple crashes along Interstate 59 between mile markers 185 and 190.
Authorities urge residents to monitor weather updates and use extreme caution. ALDOT crews are working to treat roads, but conditions are expected to remain dangerous through the weekend.
