Freezing fog is set to create hazardous conditions across eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas overnight into Saturday morning. Motorists are urged to exercise caution as visibility may drop to a quarter-mile or less, and icy patches are likely on roads, especially bridges and overpasses.
The National Weather Service in Tulsa issued a Freezing Fog Advisory in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday. According to the advisory, affected areas include Tulsa, Muskogee, McAlester, and surrounding regions in Oklahoma, as well as Fayetteville and Fort Smith in Arkansas. Visibility will be severely reduced, and freezing fog may leave a thin layer of ice on roadways, making driving dangerous.
Residents traveling on major routes such as Interstate 44 and U.S. Highway 69 should slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra following distance. Officials warn of the potential for “black ice,” an invisible hazard caused by freezing fog, which could result in slick, icy spots.
The freezing fog comes on the heels of a snowstorm that dropped 6 to 11 inches of snow in many areas. McAlester saw the heaviest snowfall at 11.5 inches. A thaw is expected starting Sunday, with daytime highs climbing into the mid-40s and above-freezing overnight lows.
In the meantime, avoid unnecessary travel during the advisory period. Check road conditions before leaving home and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. The weather is expected to clear by late Saturday morning, but early risers should remain cautious.
